Communication Workers of America Local 1298 today will announce their full support for the gubernatorial candidacy of former Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, should he become an official candidate for Governor. Malloy is currently exploring a run for the state’s highest office. CWA will host a press conference with Malloy this afternoon to formally announce the endorsement.
Local CWA President Bill Henderson said he is urging Malloy to run because he believes Malloy is Connecticut’s “best bet to protect the jobs we have, and to create new jobs for future generations.”
“Dan spent 14 years as Mayor of Stamford delivering the very thing that Connecticut needs so desperately: jobs,” said Henderson. “When it comes to growing our state’s economy and creating good jobs while protecting the ones we already have, we believe Dan is our best bet because he’s done it all before. He’s shown he has what it takes to work alongside Connecticut families in helping to put our economy back on track.”
CWA Local 1298 represents thousands of workers across New England, including more than 4,000 in Connecticut. The Local also has thousands more retired members in the state who remain interested and active in politics.
“I’m honored to have the support of Connecticut’s communications workers – and they know they have my support as well, especially in their current contract negotiations with AT&T,” said Malloy. “It’s no secret that Connecticut faces many challenges in the years ahead if we want to climb out of debt and build a more sustainable future for our children. The simple answer to so many of our problems begins and ends with job creation. Should I choose to run for Governor, I would look forward to working alongside the CWA in that effort.”
Recently, Malloy took a strong public position on the issue of paid sick leave, reaffirming his long-standing position that Connecticut employers should provide paid sick leave to their employees.
